Lake Victoria Environmental Management Project
Kenya

World Bank
The establishment of a research and development (R&D) trust fund aimed to facilitate sustainable fisheries management and wetland conservation in Lake Victoria, East Africa. A review of existing fisheries levy collection management led to recommendations on which mechanisms for collection, retention, and disbursement should be retained, alongside an investigation into additional revenue collection possibilities. The justification for creating a National Fisheries Levy Trust (NFLT) involved an economic appraisal of potential R&D investments focused on enhancing fisheries capture and production technology, as well as projects for conservation and institutional strengthening.

Socio-Economic Impact of Invasive Animals on Australia
Australia

Pest Animal Control Cooperative Research Centre
In a comprehensive study launched in May 2004 by the Australian Minister for Science at Federal Parliament House, Canberra, the economic, environmental, and social impacts of key vertebrate pests in Australia were quantified using a ‘triple bottom line’ analysis. A spreadsheet model estimated economic impacts on livestock and cropping industries, while biodiversity impacts were assessed through a ‘benefit transfer’ approach. The social impacts considered included vehicle use, commercial value, and public health concerns related to 12 species, including feral pigs, kangaroos, and feral cats. Findings were widely reported in national media, including the Canberra Times and ABC Radio.
